Nike released the first Nike Dunk

brand No Comments »

Nike released the first Nike Dunk in 1985, a high top. They were released in the colors of colleges around the country who had superior basketball teams. The same year, Michael Jordan’s first signature shoe was released, seen here. It was a marketing technique by Nike, and a sound one, and the sales of the shoe soared. But with new technology and NBA endorsements, the shoe slowly fell from favor, and eventually was almost completely forgotten.

The same year, Michael Jordan, a young basketball player with amazing promise, signed his contract for his first pro model shoe for Nike. Michael Jordan’s immediate popularity was reflected upon the sales of his shoe. This was another aspect that lead to the decline of the dunk and the huge Jordan sales. From that point on, one shoe was released a year.

Fast forward to 1999. The Hip Hop music world is making a serious resurgence, and with Hip Hop comes new styles. Sneakers have always been a big part of the rap world…look at Run DMC and their signature Adidas Shell Toes. But in 1999, it was time for something different. Enter the Nike Dunk. Clean design and vibrant colors once again fell into favor among the Hip Hop generation, and the shoe returned. However, what may have been the biggest force upon the dunk would be the release of the Nike Dunk SB (SB standing for skateboard)a couple of years later. 2001 came along, and Nike put together an impressive skateboard team to front their newest venture, and the shoes immediately began to gain popularity. Now, it isnt uncommon for one of these shoes to be for sale at high class boutiques around the country for $150+, and still selling out in a matter of hours. The shoe world was certainly brought into a new light with the Dunk SB.

Jordan Brand History

In the beginning…

Early in 1984, Nike was a struggling shoe company. The running shoe phenomenon that has fueled their sales in previous years was slowly dying and they needed a way to revitalize and reinvent themselves in order to appeal to another segment of the market. At the same time, rookie player Michael Jordan was already endorsing several products, but Nike hoped that his appeal would generate sales. Jordan, though, had other ideas. He had always preferred Adidas or the Converse shoes endorsed by North Carolina Coach, Dean Smith, and hoped to sign on with either company. Converse, with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson on board as spokesmen, were not interested in offering a better deal than Nike, and Adidas wasn’t interested at all at the time; perhaps due to Kathe Dassler’s death the same year. While Jordan, himself, did not initially see the significance of Nike’s offer, his agent, David Falk, saw a golden opportunity in Nike’s offer to create a new line of shoes called “Air Jordans.” and urged him to give Nike a chance.

Really Not That Interested..

At that time, there was not a tremendous impact from a shoe endorsement, and few companies were willing to risk so much of their marketing budget to bet on one athlete to promote their products. An athlete as paid for wearing the products but little else resulted from an endorsement. It’s possible that Jordan’s reluctant attitude stemmed from this fact as much as his allegiance to Converse and Adidas products.

Nike saw something special in Michael Jordan, though. They saw a chance, an opportunity. He was a champion with personality, charisma, and heart, and they were willing to put the company on the line. They knew from the beginning that he would be a star and wanted to help him get there. Finally, after much persuasion from his manager and parents, the reluctant rookie agreed to fly to the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon to view a special video presentation and proposal though he later stated in retrospect that he went with no intention of signing with Nike.

The video presentation featured slow-motion clips of Jordan’s college career and some of his high-flying Olympic moves with a background of then hit music “Jump” by the Pointer Sisters. Nike Head Designer, Peter Moore presented sketches of AJ1 shoes, jumpsuits, and sports apparel, all in black and red. Michael’s remarks upon seeing the designs were less than enthusiastic. He is reported to have said,

“I can’t wear that shoe, those are Devil colors”

Throughout the entire meeting Jordan was reported to seem disinterested and bored, but as he and Falk left the meeting, Jordan said to his agent, “Let’s make the deal.”

A Legacy (and a Controversy) is Born

With those four words, the Air Jordan legacy was born. Nike signed Jordan to a $2.5 million deal for 5 years, plus royalties and other fringe benefits. Peter Moore created the first AJ Logo with a basketball with wings lifting it. The introduction of the Air Jordan I turned the athletic shoe industry upside down. Before the AJ I, most basketball shoes were white, but the bold black and red styling of the Jordan I flouted this convention. The NBA banned the shoe from the league in response, but Jordan wore them anyway, racking up serious fines of up to $5000 a game. Nike, of course, was more than happy to pay these to keep the shoes on Jordan’s feet and in the public eye. All this controversy and Jordan’s spectacular numbers that year served to put the Air Jordan line on the road to becoming a household name.

Changes

After winning 1986-87 Slam Dunk competition at Seattle Coliseum, the Jordan logo changed to the familiar Jumpman logo of today, but when it came time to talk about the Air Jordan III, Michael was ready to bolt. Reaction to the Air Jordan II, due in part to the high retail price, hadn’t been stellar and designers Peter Moore and Rob Strasser had left Nike to start their own company. They began to court Jordan, hoping to develop the business around him This was a turning point for the line; a make-it-or-break-it moment. It was at this time that Tinker Hatfield stepped in to help the struggling shoe line. Immediately, Hatfield did something completely new and unheard of. His first instinct was to sit down and talk with Michael one on one and ask for his input about the design. Hatfield has stated that this was a very tense time. No one had ever approached the business of designing a shoe like this and Jordan had never had anyone ask his opinion until that time. Ultimately, though, it was the good advice of Michael’s father that saw it through. It’s reported that he advised his son to stay with the people who had done a good job for him. Eventually the process of designing the shoes and matching apparel drew Jordan in and helped reinforce his commitment to Nike. At Jordan’s request, the Air Jordan III was a three-quarter cut basketball shoe made of high quality, lighter than average materials. This non-standard approach to the process of designing basketball shoes led the Air Jordan III to rocket off the charts with its popularity, and Tinker went on to design all the Jordan models up to the Jordan XV. With the release of the Air Jordan XV and Jordan’s second retirement, both Hatfield and Jordan stepped back from the Jordan line and other designers took the reigns to continue to the legacy.

Moving Out

Air Jordan Shoes were a part of the Nike, Inc. family until late in 1997 Nike unveiled a new marketing plan and Jordan became its own sub-brand of Nike. To mark this change, the new Jordan Brand released the Air Jordan XIII, Air Jordan Team, and Air Jordan Trainers. From this point on, Jordan Brand products no longer featured the Nike name or Nike Swoosh, and their only connection to Nike,Inc is a fine print address for Nike headquarters to be used for insurance purposes.

The Shoes Changed the World

Air Jordan shoes have consistently been among the best selling basketball shoes since their creation in 1985. The Jordan brand is a household name and people of all ages and social strata line up eagerly for the release of the latest model. Some of this success can be attributed to the fact that the shoes, from the Jordan III to the most recent model, have always started with their namesake, Michael Jordan. The designers take his ideas, hobbies, and life into account and incorporate these feelings into the shoes. A number of Jordans have been designed after Jordan’s cars and some of the more recent models, like the Jordan XXI (Jordan 21) on the way, some wonder when the Air Jordan line will be retired while others speculate that, in honor of the man, the last Air Jordan will be the Jordan XXIII (Jordan 23). No matter what happens to the signature Air Jordan line, it’s a good bet that the brand and its tradition of quality, high-fashion basketball and athletic shoes will continue long after Air Jordans have retired.

part of Gucci Handbags and Purse review

brand No Comments »

It doesn’t look like much from afar, but up close this Gucci Britt Medium Purse is just gorgeous. The gold leather is adorned with the famous GG print, and the large GG logo adds just the right amount of modest gleam. I love the hint of striped fabric, in shades of mustard, plum and mocha, resting behind the logo - it’s unexpected and just barely detectable, but it gives this Gucci tote a down-to-earth feel that complements the gold perfectly.

Gucci appears to be tapping into its inner Ralph Lauren a little bit with this classic take on its Indy Large Top Handle Bag. The purse’s rich rust-colored leather and tasteful guccisima leather plate details (in lieu of the standard metal) has a timeless, elegant, and almost equestrian-like essence. Per usual there’s the standard Indy tassel and curved frame and handle, but this version is much more versatile than the other, flashier renditions that have been done in python and metallics. A little control goes a long way.

This fall, Gucci is all about the Indy Large Top Handle handbag, creating several versions in different colors and prints. While I’d love to see the design house move on to other styles, I am kind of digging this gunmetal python version. With that large tassel, curved shape, and metal plate details, this purse is destined to steal the spotlight when you take it out. The rounded handle is a bit cumbersome, and the handbag definitely won’t get a lot of mileage, but it’s a fun, trendy, and sexy bag to play with in the meantime.

I like the curved shape of this Gucci Snow Glam Medium Purse, and I like the patent leather. What I don’t like, however, is the red, black, and white color combination, which makes me think of a) my highschool colors, and b) a race car. If they’d simply stuck on one - or perhaps even two - colors I’d be first in line to pick up a hip hobo like this. As it is, it looks a little too sporty for its high-fashion caliber.

Designer Fendi B. Buckle Handbag in Bubble Gum Pink
I love the Fendi B Bag, even though every other person walking down the street has this memorable bag. The oversized B. buckle Fendi handbags made their smashing first appearance on the spring 2006 runway, and season after season the designers over at Fendi attempt to dazzle us with a new dressing. This one in particular is the Pink Patent B-Bag. I do love the color pink but the fact that this bag is dressed from head-to-toe in this color, in my eyes it’s slightly shy of dazzling me. Don’t get me wrong, I do l-o-v-e the color pink (I own many pink bags) but there is just too much bubble gum pink (looks slightly plain / boring). However, if this bag was available in a two-tone color pattern I probably would fall head-over-heals. It is after all the lovely original Fendi B. Buckle Bag.

Need to intensify your look for the day? Well look no further. Fendi just came out with a bunch of new neon wallets that will surely brighten up your summer outfit.

The clutches are new to the House’s small accessory purse line for summer and so far are only available at eluxury.com where they hold a retail price of $395 per pop.

Dressed in a coated leather embossed double-F mini-signature pattern in the colors aqualicious Blue, deep bloody Red, and willy wonky gold bar Orange. This neon newbie also features a front flap closure decorated with a polished silver metal buckle, that pops open to retail the logo textile lining which features eight card slots, clear ID window, and three flat pockets. Measurements: 7.3″x 3.75″x 0.5″

Fendi To You Embellished Convertible Bag Shoulder bag by day then fold it up and clutch it close by night. The “To You Embellished Convertible Bag” by Fendi is the newbie to the house designed for you, the bagista that wants a bag that can be used for more than one occasion – day purse and a night bag in one.

Have you discovered the new 2 in 1 Fendi purses?
Dressed in a wild confetti-like wine colored fabric and tonal python trim. When upright in the full shoulder bag position, Fendi’s name is signed on the front, but (am I the only one that sees this) when you fold the bag up and convert it to the oversized clutch, it reads “INDI”. Weird.

Price. Here’s the shocker, this Embellished Convertible Bag retails for a whopping $5,040 per pop. A bit steep for such a bag if you ask me. If you like the convertible “To You” bag idea but are looking to not spend over $2k then check out the 80’s-looking taupe suede and leather geometric pattern version.

Ashley Olsen really Loves her Vintage Fendi Tote Some people just wear a bag too much. But even though Ashley (as well as MK) has used this gorgeous vintage Fendi crocodile tote over-and-over again for well over a year, I will never get sick of it. I am in love.

The latest sighting of Ash and her fav tote was yesterday, while hanging out with her sis in Malibu California.
side note: If you love this tote keep an eye out on eBay. I couldn’t find one up for sale at the moment, but every now and then one pops up, usually carrying a price of around $9k. Really this Fendi crocodile handbag is the best investment ever and will truly last you for years, even decades to come.

Christian Dior Handbags

Here are the history for Christian Dior Handbags, Christian Dior was born in the year 1905, in France on the French coastline, in a small town called Grenville. Dior lived in this town until he was about 5 years old, and then he up and moved with his family for Paris, France.

Christian Dior fell upon hard times, with the untimely death of both his mother and his brother, and he moved to the Soviet Union. He was hurting very bad financially, so an old-time friend of his gave him a place to stay and he also helped him start his career sketching dresses and hats.

Christian Dior started to sell his sketches, and some famous actresses loved them and purchased them. In 1941 when Christian Dior was out of the military he moved back to Paris — and he joined another designer by the name of Lucien Lelong. Dior stayed with him until 1946 when he moved out on his own, and got his own salon and designed for himseld. Dior’s first show was 90 outfits that were worn by six girls.

After his first collection, Christian Dior sat long and hard and tried to think what the women of Paris would want as the next big thing in their fashionable clothing. He thought that women were sick of the broad shoulders, built for men, really covered up look that was going on during this time and he mainly decided to shake things up a bit. Christian Dior thought to himself that he had to ” Bring back beauty, feminine clothing, soft rounded shapes, and full flowing skirts). He wanted to make the women feel like flowers again like they felt in the 1930’s, and he called this collection the COROLLE, also known as the ring of petals collection.

Women all over the world were embracing this wonderful new look of the Christian Dior Dresses. For some reason though, even with so many people loving this new look, many people were also against it. Some models that were on a photographic shoot even had things as extreme as having their clothes town off of them, and some governments throughout the world forbid the line, calling the collection outrageous and wasteful — I wonder if they would feel the same today.

With many people loving Christian Diors styles, some when be come to USA would greet him with signs protesting his clothing line. Christian Dior didn’t let the negativity of some hold him back, and every 6 months he released a new line, releasing 22 lines very swiftly.

The Master which is what Christian Dior was known by, passed on in the year of 1957, as he died of a very sudden heart attack. The fashion world as a whole was stunned in dis-belief when the new came out, and the company of Christian Dior which had over 1200 employee’s was devestated. The company continued to prosper after the death of the creator, as the number two in line took charge and continued the domination in the fashion industry.

In the 1960’s Christian Dior once again shocked the fashion world with its designs, which included motorcycle jackets that were made out of alligator skin, and also mink coats that were ribbed sweater sleeves.

In 1960, Mark Bohan took over the company, and he was only 34 years old. It was only a year later in 1961 when Mark Bohan released his first collection under the Christian Dior name, and that collection was called the “Slim Line”,

and it was a very big success. Christian Dior continued to expand, opening up stores in cities such as New York City, Paris, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and other majojr hotspots. Christian Dior was becoming well known as high end luxurious handbags. They not only expanded their area in which they sold their goods, but also their line of goods they were manufacturing.

Christian Dior soon added shoes, necklaces, earrings, perfume, cologne, pens, hats, scarves and many other accessories to their product line. Christian Dior is mostly known for their wonderful gowns and handbags, and they are also widely replicated.

You see many women who can’t afford to spend 1,200 or some odd dollars on an authentic purse, they will be a replica christian dior handbag from a vendor, mostly they are made in China. These purses are made out of lesser quality materials, and are poorly made and sold for cheap. You can find them on most online auction sites and they are also very common at trade shows and flea markets.
