Well i succeeded in taking some photos of the flags with horses in Centennial Park. Thanks almost exclusively to the wonderous Debbie Pryor. I was so nervous that my shoulders ceased up and I lost the power of speach. The show opens at Artspace, Cowper Wharf rd, Woolloomooloo NSW on Thursday 24th of May and runs for about a month.

one of the images that will be exhibited along side the flags.
On friday i caught the ferry over to neutral bay to visit may gibbs’ house. I have always loved the suggle pot and cuddlepie books, and the visit was well worth it. The house (see image) was built for May,overlooking the harbour, and is peculiar in that there is a teeny tiny kitchen and bathroom - the rest of the house being mainly studio/living area in an open plan. very unusual for the era.

I was surprised to hear that May’s husband (who she married at 41) was a close friend of Captain De Groot, and was a member of the extremely right wing New Guard party. For those not up with Australian History(not that i particularly am) - De Groot gatecrashed the Sydney Harbour opening ceremony on horseback and cut the ribbon before Jack Lang, the controversial Labout leader of the time.
There is a pretty watercolour portrait of Mrs De Groot done by May Gibbs hanging in the house. Also in the collection is a satirical cartoon of bush animals goose stepping, I am not aware of what staunchly feminist May Gibbs thought of husbands antics.
this is a video i made for no through road. matt banham and phil elvrum sing on it.

sorry for the messy link
on wednesday i arrived in Sydney for an exhibition ‘publicity’, that Reuben Keehan is curating at artspace. the show is taking a look at public space and perhaps, small, lame, weird and gentle ways of engaging with that big topic.
so i am staying at the gunnery residential studios - which is opposite the fingerwharf at woolloomooloo.

which is pretty nice.
this work needs me to photograph people on horses with these flags i have made - public huh?
feel so nervous, my skin is too thin for this kind of thing.
horse outing tomorrow.
