Well Australia have lost, comprehensively, the one day series to South Africa but it is not a sign of a sudden lack of talent but piss poor selections.

Firstly the openers: Marsh and Warner are awesome players in Twenty20 but are they the long term answer to kick start our innings? They are both similar players, more suited to the shortest version of the game. While both have great ability in the game its questionable whether Warner with very little experience should be given the tough job of facing the opening deliveries. There are plenty of blokes tipped for the opening Test spot, surely one of these, particularly Hughes would be a great option here.

Middle: Mike Hussey (although in a slump), Ponting and Clarke (when he returns) are all where they should be but the question mark remains over the rest. White and David Hussey are arguably not good enough to make the side as pure batsmen or bowlers and seem to be all rounders for the sake of all rounders. We already have one in James Hopes who although will never make headlines with a 5 wicket haul or a century always makes solid contributions with both bat and ball and is one of the most useful and underrated blokes in the side. Clearly, Symonds is a missing link in the side but it remains unclear what his future in the game is. Marcus North and of course Shane Watson are both much better options.

The rest: I’d have Ronchi ahead of Haddin while having a serious look at our ‘pure’ bowling attack with Bracken the only shoe in.

On another note: How much better is this One day series than the old Tri-Series?! No there aren’t a heap of dead rubber games after Australia qualifies early, no there are not a bunch of games between the two visitors that nobody is interested in. Also, the introduction of the batting power play and the new ball at 35 overs have been great initiatives to keep the 50 over game interesting. Everyone’s talking about whether Ponting has been taking the power plays at the right time, hey presto, people are talking about tactics and strategy in the context of 50 over cricket!!
